Integrating Technology
#1
Objective:
The students will be able to identify what an ocean is and, what causes waves.
State Standards:
Standard #3: Life Science
Benchmark #1: The students will develop an understanding of the characteristics of living things.
Indicators 1,3:
1. Discusses that organisms’ live only in environments in which their need can be met.
2. Observes ling things in various environments.
Time:
60 minutes
Materials:
• 2 tubs
• Straws
• Ocean sounds CD
• Video (Ocean habitats Light and Dark Zones, by 100% educational videos)
• World puzzle
• Wave bottle
Antic. Set:
To start the lesson students were instructed what the agenda was for the lesson. Students were tolled that we were going to learn about what an ocean is. “We are going to do one activity that shows you what an ocean is.” “Also we are going to do another activity about waves, and the way they are formed/made.” After explaining to the students the agenda for our lesson we watched a video over the ocean to gain their attention. Following the Ocean video the students were shown a wave bottle to excite them about waves. These wave bottles were then passed around so that each student could observe it.
Explore &Explain:
Activity 1:
In activity one, students were to put a puzzle (attached) of the world together. This puzzle consisted of 16 pieces. Before the students were to start their activity’s I asked questions to different students such as “Hope would you please pull out one puzzle piece?” “What color covers most of that piece?” “Why do you feel that most of that piece is blue?” These questions were to try and get the students to understand that there is a lot more oceans is the world than land, and that the ocean is a really big thing. Following the puzzle the student had a discussion with me as I was up in the front with a transparency of the puzzle that the students had just put together. During this discussion the students and I went over what the puzzle showed, and also what each color stud for (green (land), Blue (ocean)).
Activity 2:
In the second activity students were to learn how waves in the ocean are mad. Students were lead in a dissection over waves. “What do you know about waves?” “How do you think they are formed/made?” After students had came to the conclusion that they to thing that waves are made by wind, students were then split into two groups. Each group had a plastic tub of water. Each tub was approximately 3-4 inches full. In each tub there was a boat. The boat was to help show how the waves moved. Each student was then given a straw. The students were to take these straws and make their own wind. Students blow in the straws onto the water and saw the water and the boat move. The students were instructed to make a nice summer day wind, a stormy day wind, and a hurricane wind. By doing this, the students really understood why the whether affects the oceans, and how waves are formed.
Closure:
For the closure of this lesson students were to sit down on the class rug, for some thought about what we just learned. Before we discussed the lesson we turned on some ocean sounds and tolled the students to close there eyes and think about all they just learned and what they think of when they hear. After a few moments of thought names were drawn out of our cup to talk about what they liked most, and one thing that they learned today during the lesson.
Guided Practice:
The guided practice for this lesson is a best choice worksheet. Students had a worksheet that had four questions on it. These four questions were filling in the blank questions that had two answers to choice from to the side. These questions are questions over how waves are made, and also what the ocean is.
Independent Practice:
The independent practice has fill in the blank answers also just like the guided. The only difference from the guided practice except it has a coloring page of the puzzle that they had put together. Students were instructed to just use the colors blue and green. The students were to circle the answers for the fill in the blank and then color the oceans blue on the coloring page, and the land green on the coloring page.

Lesson plan title: Oceans and Waves
Found at: One of my own
Being that SHES does not have much technology available at their school, I thought I would add technology to this lesson for the future. Technologies that could be used could be clickers, the web, and the Elmo.
Objectives of the technologies:
1. Clickers: The clickers could be used during the guided practice part of this lesson. I feel that if the clickers were used I would have a better understanding of how well the students understood the lesson before they got to the independent practice.
2. Web: I web would provide videos of the ocean and waves and better show how waves are formed. Also students can actually see what the ocean looks like, being that many have not ever seen the ocean, and trying to give them that experience I feel would teach them more than just hearing about the ocean.
3. Elmo: The Elmo would help during the puzzle activity of this lesson. I knew that for some of the students the puzzle would be hard, so I feel that if I could complete the puzzle with them then they would have achieved them much faster than they did.
Software and Hardware requirements:
Clickers: Would need the computer software to be able to see what each student’s answers were.
Web: Really the only software needed would be a computer and Internet hook up.
Elmo: To use the Elmo the class would also have to have a projector and the cable hookup in order to have everything work well.
Skills required:
Teacher: The teacher would have to now how to hook each technology up to work orderly, and would have to have the web videos up and running for the students ahead of time. The teacher would have to get some training most likely to lean how to hook up the Elmo and clickers
Student: The students would have to be taught and be given some trial runs on the clickers to see how they really work. Students would also need to be given rules on how to use the Internet, and where they are aloud to go and what they are supposed to do. Student should have a mapped out assignment to follow when on the Internet.
Reflection on the technology:
I feel that if I would have had these technologies when I was teaching this lesson the students would have better understood the lesson more so then they already did. I also feel that with the clickers I would have had a much better understanding of how well the students were understanding the lesson and I would have known if I needed to start a remediation or go on.

Lesson plan title: Mend My Broken Heart
Found at: http://www.lessonplanspage.com/MathLAAdditionSubtractionMendBrokenHeartIdea23.htm
Technologies used: Technologies that could be used in this lesson could consist of calculators, web games, and video camera.
Objectives of the technologies:
1.Calculators: Could be used to use mental math and then have students cheek their answers though use of a calculator.
2. Web games: On http://edweb.tusd.k12.az.us/ekowalcz/math/index.htm they have many interactive math games that could prepare the students to get their minds working in the mathematical way that they will need in order to complete this activity.
3.Video camera: With the use of video students could make a move about how their harts were mended in a mathematical setting.
Software and Hardware requirements:
Some of the software requirements would consist of cable hook ups to an Elmo for the calculators to be demonstrated, the site and place on the site were the games are placed just for that section, and the for the use of the video camera the students would have to have a program to make there video such as iMoive.
Skills required:
Teacher: The teacher will need to know how to hook up the proper cables for the calculators, and the video camera to a computer. The teacher will also need to explain how the students are to use the calculators and the video cameras.
Students: Students will need to be instructed on how to use the calculators and cameras, so that they can used these tools/technologies in an affective way.
Reflection on the technology:
Being that I have never taught this lesson I am not shore that these technologies would improve this lesson. I feel that used in the right way that students would not only learn a lot about math but also the use of technology. I feel by using these technologies that the students would be exited and even more interested in this lesson.
